3 Reasons Glass Display Cases are Important for Loss Prevention

Glass display cases are versatile. They are wonderfully useful for merchandising jewelry and other small items or valuable collectibles such as antique comics or baseball cards. They are equally useful for featuring larger items. Beyond their versatility, though, glass display cases are the ultimate when it comes to loss prevention — something that should be an integral part of your store’s physical layout and sales procedures.

Here are three reasons why glass display cases are important for loss prevention.

1. Preventing theft.

The mere fact that merchandise is enclosed boosts protection. Glass display cases can be custom-designed to fit every type of space — tall, free-standing or smaller, wall-mounted cases for the perimeter, or lower counter-top display cabinets in the center. Items inside can be viewed through the top, from the front and/or sides. Adding locks increases security, because even the most vigilant employees cannot watch every square inch of the store while also assisting customers.

But you can’t expect glass display cases to prevent theft on their own. Install pick-resistant locks that require different keys rather than just one key that opens every case. Keep display cases locked at all times during business hours. Display your most valuable merchandise throughout your store rather than all together in a single cabinet (and never near the entrance).

Arrange display cases so your staff can easily see the entire sales floor. And teach your employees how to spot a shoplifter.

Grocers, convenience stores and others that offer to-go food and beverages are at the mercy of shoplifters, too. Food-grade glass display cases, refrigerated or not, keep products fresh and protect them against germs as well as “sticky fingers.”

2. Preventing breakage.

Glass display cases also shield items that are not so easy to steal but which still require protection from touching or potential breakage. Retail security experts recommend tempered glass, because it’s stronger than standard glass and doesn’t shatter into dangerous shards if it does break.

You can take protection to the next level with custom-designed showcases constructed of polycarbonate instead of glass. You won’t lose visibility or clarity when it comes to presentation, but you will gain peace of mind, because polycarbonate is far stronger than glass. With a scratch-resistant coating, it is ideal for counter-style display cases.

3. Preventing lost sales.

Sales may not seem like an element of loss prevention, but losing sales shrinks your bottom line just as theft and breakage do. You can’t sell merchandise customers can’t see.

With glass display fixtures and proper procedures in place, you can display more items on your sales floor without sacrificing security. That gives shoppers more opportunities to spy exactly what they want. Displaying merchandise under glass confers value, too. These items must be more important or desirable, because they are specially protected.

Glass display cases and smart sales procedures are an excellent start. These additional security measures can help prevent losses when you’re open for business and during off-hours, as well.
