9 Types of Jewelry Showcases and How to Choose the Right One

Security is an issue for every retailer, but it’s of paramount importance for jewelry stores. Your merchandise is very small and, often, very valuable. In some cases, it’s also fragile. Choosing the right jewelry showcases will allow you to display every item beautifully while ensuring it is also protected.

When it comes to jewelry showcases, you have many choices.

We’ve pulled together this list that should spark plenty of ideas, in terms of both materials and styles. Bear in mind that, for some types of jewelry, open shelving or table-top displays may be appropriate. On the other hand, when it comes to maximum protection, fully enclosed display cases outfitted with locks may be your best choice.

Also, keep in mind that creating a beautiful exhibit is essential, but your store is not a museum. You’ll want to arrange each display for ultimate buying inspiration.

  1. Full-view cases double as a counter.

  2. Half-view cases have storage cabinets underneath.

  3. Wall cases help make the most of available sales space.

  4. Towers – rotating displays for earrings and other small items – can be free-standing or countertop size.

  5. Glass is a simple, timeless material for jewelry displays because it’s essentially invisible. Enclosed glass showcases make browsing easy but deter shoplifting. You can use glass as a counter, to “open up” the front or sides of a display case or create a 360o, free-standing “viewing box.” Unfortunately, glass is easy to scratch, and it’s breakable.

  6. Acrylic is increasingly popular as an alternative to glass. It provides the same visibility benefits, yet it won’t crack or shatter from impact. It is also considerably lighter than glass. While that doesn’t matter for permanent fixtures, it can be a consideration for wall-mounted display cases.

  7. The structure of your showcases can be crafted from metals such as aluminum or stainless steel, or even have copper or other decorative metal accents. Metal can look highly sophisticated or “industrial chic.”

  8. Wood is a time-honored material for constructing display cases. Like metal, wood can convey a wide variety of looks, whether you allow the color and grain to show or the wood is painted to blend with your overall décor.

  9. Whatever styles and materials you choose for your jewelry showcases, you want to present every item in the best possible light. Literally. Experts recommend lighting from inside the case and also from above, so pieces are just as sparkly when brought out for customer examination. Although both fluorescent and halogen lighting are still popular, many jewelers have switched to LED lighting because it’s brighter and cooler. (That’s cool as in temperature, but LED lights can provide some pretty cool visual effects, too.)

Your goal is to highlight and protect your merchandise, but also to establish and complement your store’s décor and ambiance. The type of jewelry you sell, the price range, your clientele and location all play into your decisions when it comes to choosing the right jewelry showcases.
