An Interactive Kiosk Case Study: WestJet Christmas Surprise

WestJet uses digital kiosk to grant Christmas wishes.

A viral video that gained millions of view in the span of a few days highlights the functionality of interactive kiosks. WestJet, a Canadian airline, pulled off what they are calling a "Christmas Miracle," which was made possible with the responsive abilities of digital kiosks.

As you can see in the video above, WestJet passengers would walk up to a large kiosk decorated to look like a giant Christmas present. Following the prompt on the large digital display, passengers would scan their boarding passes at a scanner located to the right of the screen. There were also WestJet personnel standing by to help passengers with the process.

The information from the boarding pass would be logged by the team running the promotion and supplied to a Santa Claus in a video studio. Santa would then appear on the large display and greet the passenger personally by name. Passengers found themselves in a live conversation with Santa Claus! The conversations led to the ultimate question, "What do you want for Christmas?" According to a WestJet representative, the kiosks were able to transmit the video feed over a wireless connection, but the hardware was hardwired over Ethernet in order to provide a smooth, clear stream feed of Santa Claus for the passengers.

Upon answering the inquisitive Santa Claus, WestJet team members set off to collect the items travelers requested. Prior to the passengers landing at their final destination of Calgary, team members wrapped all the presents and dropped them off at baggage claim with care.
