How Material Variety can Increase Store Attraction

The design of your store directly affects your sales. Custom displays can play a starring role in your design success.

To attract today’s savvy shoppers, retailers need to apply smart design when creating custom store fixtures. Smart design uses a variety of materials to create display fixtures. That variety gives fixtures both subtle complements and bold contrasts in texture, color, freshness and other factors that can contribute significantly to each shopper’s personal experience.

There are almost unlimited ways in which you can integrate wood, metal and acrylic in custom displays. In addition to blending or contrasting with one another to provide interesting looks, the materials you use can visually “disappear” or "blend together" to make the merchandise take center stage or prominently draw attention to merchandise on display.

Retailers are focusing on fixtures

A survey conducted in June by the Association of Retail Environments (ARE) showed that 46% of retailers plan to increase spending on technology this year to prepare themselves for 2015 and 42% plan to spend more on fixtures.

The ARE’s 2015 Purchasing Forecast noted nearly half – 47% – of small retailers (fewer than 200 locations) are focusing on new fixtures. Among large retailers with more than 1000 locations, 44% indicated new fixture spending was a priority and 33% of mid-size retailers planned to increase spending on displays.

ARE also notes one of the top trends in retail fixture design is displays that not only house merchandise but complement the store’s architectural design and furnishings. That requires custom displays.

Well-designed displays are one of your strongest selling tools

They enhance your store’s ability to attract shoppers, draw the eye (and your customers’ feet) around your store and heighten interest in the merchandise. They can encourage customers to interact with your products. You can integrate wood, metal and acrylic to create:

  • Free-standing floor displays.
  • End caps.
  • Display counters with wood cabinetry and glass-enclosed countertops. Perfect for displaying jewelry or other protected merchandise.
  • Shelving, cabinetry, hanging rods and racks.
  • POP displays.
  • Kiosks and interactive touch-screen displays that enable customers or staff to check on pricing or obtain additional product information. Displays that engage customers are trendy, they can improve customer satisfaction and relieve pressure on busy sales staff.
  • Customer service desks, sales counters, checkout areas and other types of cash wraps.
  • The specific materials you choose to integrate into your display designs depends on the type of merchandise you carry and how your customers interact with those items.
  • Wood can look solidly traditional or sleekly modern. It can include handsome detailing. Wood-like or wood-based synthetic products can sometimes provide the same look at a lower cost, such as slat wall or laminates for counters or cabinets.
  • Aluminum or stainless steel can be the primary construction material for custom displays that need extra sturdiness or where you want an “industrial” look. Powder coating or spray-painted finishes can extend the life of metal components where durability is important but the more upscale look of stainless steel is not necessary. And metal can be a handsome choice for hardware or detailing.
  • Acrylic is transparent like glass, but it’s lighter and safer. It can show off merchandise without upstaging it. Acrylic is also popular for accessories such as literature or menu holders.

Creating custom displays enables you to use a variety of materials in appealing ways that are unique to your store. That reinforces your brand. If you aren’t sure what custom displays might look and perform best in your store, an experienced design-manufacture firm can guide you expertly toward choices that will help you build traffic and sales.
