Fall Retail Fixtures

How to Decorate your Store Front for Fall

Fall DecorWhat says “fall” to you? Cooler weather? Colorful leaves? Pumpkins? Ghosts and goblins? Football? Hmmmm. Sounds like inspiration for fall retail displays. You can decorate your windows and create in-store displays with fall “icons” or you can turn them into fixtures to hold or hang merchandise.

Shoppers are ready for a change, and changing your windows and POS displays focuses their attention on your new-season products. Choose the themes and colors that blend best with your type of merchandise and your customers. Think in terms of warm reds, oranges, yellows, greens and browns as well as warm metallics like bronze and gold to paint or cover your fixtures. Use recycled wood or metal for shelving or furnishings.

Football.

  • Feature a display of “game day” merchandise – plush sweaters, gloves and hats, rain gear, whatever is appropriate for your fall weather. Or create a tailgate-themed display of tableware and food items.
  • Turn a table or counter top into a football field with green paper and some white stripes.
  • Use miniature footballs or make pompoms to decorate displays or identify special product areas.
  • Create displays in your favorite team’s colors. Pick the team most appropriate to your customer’s age – high school, college or pro – or create separate areas themed with each team’s colors to show support for all your customers’ favorite teams. If you can, stock each display with merchandise in those same team colors.

Leaves.

If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with plentiful leaves, all you need is a bag or basket to collect beautiful decorations to complement your fall retail displays. Sprinkle them around, pile them up, corral them in a picnic basket, stick them on the front of your cash wrap counter or free-standing kiosks. Spray paint your leaves silver or gold to add extra panache.

Or make your own leaves out of tissue paper, magazine or newspaper pages, cardboard or fabric.

Pumpkins.

PumpkinDecoratingUse tiny ones as decorations, or think of larger pumpkins as signage in the round – SALE, 20% off, NEW! You can paint them, write or draw on them with permanent-ink markers. And of course you can carve them. They’re easily portable, so you can rearrange them to keep customers interested or lead them through your various merchandise areas.

Need more inspiration?

  • Use a fire pit (no live fires, of course!) to hold merchandise items or create an outdoor scene to display camping, hunting or fishing gear. Don’t forget the marshmallows.
  • Put a basket of crisp, colorful apples next to your cash register for customers to take on their way out. Or serve small cups of hot apple cider to warm customers and infuse your store with tempting fragrance that will surely draw people inside.
  • You’ll find more ideas than you could ever want on Pinterest. Don’t forget to post pictures of your own retail displays on your store’s Pinterest board and your website, and share them with your social media fans and followers. Why should in-store shoppers be the only ones to enjoy your fall retail displays?

Plan ahead.

Brainstorming fall retail display ideas is just the beginning. Your windows and POS displays will look most inviting and sell best for you if you approach them in a systematic manner.

If your store is large, you can go whole hog on fall retail display ideas. If you have a tiny boutique, focus on color rather than “things” that take up space or use just a few interesting items that set the tone without overwhelming your merchandise.
