Effective Visual Merchandising Starts With Display Cases Pick the right display cases for your retail store

No matter how tantalizing the merchandise in your retail store, it will not sell itself. You have to present it to shoppers in a way that catches their eye and makes them want to look more closely. Creating the most effective visual merchandising starts with picking the right display cases for your retail store. While there are several different kinds of fixtures, enclosed display cases are some of the most versatile.

Advantages of Display Cases

Display cases protect items from dust, damage and theft. They can be fitted with key or combination locks for even greater security. They’re easy to browse, particularly when you place larger items on lower shelves, smallest on top for aesthetic balance and greatest visibility. And retail showcases facilitate interaction between salesperson and shopper, because items must be removed for close inspection.

Better yet, because shoppers perceive items displayed “under glass” as more valuable, display cases automatically confer value. You can even leverage that value by combining high-ticket items that must be enclosed and hot sellers or brand new items that will draw customer attention with the merchandise that needs some extra promotion.

Display cases that sell.

Picking the right retail cases will make your entire store more attractive and help you sell more, too.

  • Full view units
Have tempered glass and can be used as a counter, too. Merchandise is viewed from the top and front by customers, and there is storage in back.
  • Half-view cases
The lower section is used for storage, with one or two shelves above for display.
  • Jewelry showcases
Also hold other fragile items, coins or rare memorabilia, stamps, comic books or other types of valuable collectibles. Lighting is essential here, to make gems and precious metals twinkle and gleam.
  • Wall cases
A good choice for larger items. You can make them look deeper with mirrored backing. Some wall units also have drawers to store back-up inventory.
  • Towers
Rotating cases in which items such as earrings hang from hooks, on arms or “wings” that radiate from the center. They can rotate manually or automatically.
  • Lighted
Other than some wall units, display cases that make strategic use of light can dramatically enhance the appeal of any type of merchandise. You can use halogen or fluorescent lights, although many retailers are switching to brighter, cooler “high-tech” LED lighting.

Custom-designed display showcases enable you to match the look and ambiance of your store.

Plan ahead.

Even if you’re very good at visualizing, you’ll find it easier to choose the right display cases and other fixtures if you plan your layout first. You can sketch your plan on paper, or use specialized software that enables you to drag and drop elements precisely sized to your store’s dimensions. Having a copy of your plan will give you a reference tool for the future, when you want to make changes.

Selecting the right display cases and other fixtures is just the first step in fulfilling your visual merchandising plan. How you “flesh out” your fixtures with merchandise, props, signage, and lighting completes the visual presentation that says “pick me, pick me!”
