When you think of retail display cases, what comes to mind? For most of us, it’s probably a waist-high cabinet with a glassed-in top section, such as you commonly see in jewelry stores. But the truth is, there are a number of different types of retail display cases. And that means there is a style perfect for your merchandise.

Enclosed display cases offer many benefits.

They are popular for displaying jewelry, watches, collectibles such as rare books, colorful minerals and old toys, eyeglasses and edibles. (Specialty cases can be heated or refrigerated if necessary.) Tiny, fragile and high-value items are all easy for shoppers to view from multiple angles or even 360o. Yet they are protected from dust, humidity, fingerprints, spills, potential breakage and theft. Keyed or combination locks provide additional security but allow easy access for store personnel to remove an item for a customer’s personal inspection.

Choosing the perfect retail display cases for your store.

There are four typical styles of display cases:

  • Counter-height cabinets. These can have multiple display shelves, drawers that rotate to the top for display, or just a display space the top with storage below.
  • Tall (or “curio”) cabinets. These can have glass-front doors as well as glass on the sides for added visibility.
  • Towers, either floor-standing or table-top. Towers that rotate are good choices for corners, “end caps,” and also for cash wrap counters.
  • Wall-mounted cases.

Retail display cases come in all sizes and shapes – including unusual shapes such as this 5-sided glass and metal tower. What will work best for you? Consider:

  • The height, width, depth, and weight of merchandise you want to display
  • The number of items you want to display per case or shelf
  • Measurements of store space available

These details will help you choose the most effective display case styles, sizes, number of shelves you will need (or can have), and so on. You can combine styles in virtually any configuration, depending on the type and size of your merchandise and amount of space available. Table-top and wall-mounted styles can significantly expand your sales space – something that is especially valuable in stores with a small footprint. Portable cases are also easy to re-arrange, to keep your displays and store looking fresh.

You can add interior lighting, mirrored backs, or other features to further enhance items on display and/or draw attention to the display cases themselves. Or mount a single display case on a pedestal to create a focal point. With this display, Vans proves retail display cases are indeed versatile, even for showing off unexpected merchandise.

Visual merchandising that sells requires a holistic approach to product presentation. By choosing the right types of retail display cases, you will be able to show off all your wares most temptingly. Don’t forget your cash wrap counter. You need part of that space for your cash register, etc. but don’t overlook this excellent final opportunity to promote last-minute purchases.
