How to Use Store Fixtures in Your Thanksgiving Displays

How to use store fixtures for your thanksgiving displays

For many retailers, Thanksgiving can be a tough holiday for displays. Halloween and Christmas have both become so high-powered, that Thanksgiving seems to pale by comparison. Yet packing in the Christmas displays too early feels dispiriting to many shoppers instead of enticing.

For Thanksgiving, it’s all about color and props – seasonal displays that transform your store fixtures into scenes of bounty and homey warmth.

Turkeys taste good, but they have limited appeal as store fixtures.

While nothing says “Thanksgiving” quite like a turkey, Old Tom may not be appropriate for every store. Take fine jewelry, for instance. However, there’s no reason you can’t go seasonal with other items we associate with Thanksgiving. A few well-placed fall leaves set the tone, simply and tastefully. Cocoa-colored “mannequin” fixtures coordinate beautifully and provide the perfect background for jewelry that sparkles brilliantly (thanks to clever highlighting).

What else can you do for this all-American holiday?

  • “Set” one of your display tables for Thanksgiving dinner. Put smaller products at each place, and sit a mannequin or two (or more) in chairs, poised to partake.
  • Post a sign at the front of your store inviting customers to search for the “20% off turkey” among your various store fixtures. Move the turkey around every day or so.
  • Build a cornucopia of products as a featured display. A cornucopia says “bounty,” and when it’s overflowing, it says “offering.” What better enticements for your customers to look more closely?
  • Seasonal displays on end caps are a great way to unload some of your merchandise “turkeys,” as well as move your newest goodies and impulse items.
  • Paint fixtures in fall colors to complement your new merchandise and perk up the overall ambiance.
  • Sprinkle season-specific merchandise around your store to help draw traffic toward all your “departments.”
  • Build up eye-catching pyramids of products or put smaller items in bushel baskets, tin buckets, or wooden boxes.
  • Create displays that highlight fall-colored items from throughout your store.
  • Pile up leaves near your sale table and invite customers to “rake in the savings.”
  • Orange isn’t your favorite color? Don’t despair! Pumpkins and gourds now come in every shade of orange, plus yellow, green, fun patterns, and yes, white. Pumpkins are also easy to paint or write on, so use big ones as signs to highlight certain items or point the way to special merchandise areas.
  • Don’t overdo the fall props to the point of clutter – you want to create a warm, cozy atmosphere, but not detract from your merchandise.
  • Take pictures of your Thanksgiving displays to post on your website, social media, and e-newsletter, to entice online shoppers and searchers to visit your store.

Your most prominent store “fixture” is your window, so make the most of it with an inspiring Thanksgiving display. If turkeys and pumpkins aren’t your thing, create a window that promotes the “thanks” behind the holiday.

And place a basket of apples next to your cash wrap, as a “thanks for shopping with us” snack.
