The Future of Wireless Store Design

Luring Wireless Device Customers With a Changing Store Landscape

Change is constant in the world of small electronics. That’s expected. But wireless retail is evolving even faster than the rest of the tech world – spurred by dramatic changes in consumers and products. Consumers are changing their buying habits, switching from long-term contracts to prepaid cellular, while retailers are changing their inventory, adding a host of new wireless devices and accessories on top of the traditional cell phones and tablets. And according to Jim Palmer, President of Promotional Products, the new mix of products is having a dramatic impact on the future of wireless store design.

Palmer pictures the store of the future with a plethora of wireless home gadgets and accessories in the front, and the more traditional products in the back. “When you go into the store, some of the new designs call for the phones to be positioned in the rear of the store,” says Palmer. “It’s much like a grocery store puts the milk in the rear of the store to get the customer to come all the way through and see things on the way in.”

According to Paul Roth, AT&T’s president of retail sales, wireless retailers will stay relevant by offering a store design that serves the customer’s demand for a store that offers highly personalized services, wireless solutions and emotionally engaging experiences. This means the store design must be open, warm and inviting.

This design shift is in tandem with Jim Palmer’s wireless retail predictions. “One of the unique attributes or changes in the wireless industry is the need to merchandise non-traditional devices,” says Palmer. “The fixtures need to be flexible in their design and able to merchandise to both relevant products today and whatever the future may hold for wireless products.”
