How to Design a Kiosk

Because you’re starting with a blank sheet of paper, designing a mall kiosk sounds like a simple project. But creating the right design can be extremely complicated, because the kiosk must accomplish two very different goals. It needs to be visually appealing to attract customers, but it also needs to be properly designed to provide an efficient base of operations. Kiosks come in all shapes and sizes, but the size and shape of your particular mall kiosk design will depend on what you plan to sell, because as every designer knows, form follows function.

Jim Palmer, president of Palmer Retail Solutions and a leading expert in mall kiosk design, notes that food service kiosks for products like pretzels and gourmet popcorn have completely different requirements than an electronics kiosk selling cell phones and accessories.

Common Kiosk Mistakes

Have a successful kiosk by avoiding these project pitfalls.

A kiosk is a small business venture, and should be treated as such. Best business practices should carry over to the retail project. There are details specific to kiosks, such as location, foot-traffic, and usability that should be kept in mind. Basic business building blocks still require a kiosk entrepreneur to be marketing savvy with a clear understanding of financials. Have a successful kiosk by avoiding some common business mistakes.

Retail Kiosk Business Mistakes

  • Poor execution. Execution is key. Technical errors keep kiosks from making money. Customers will stop coming to the kiosk if it is unreliable. Maybe it requires you to spend more money on upkeep, but profit in the long-run will be greater.
  • Refusing to innovate. Don't succumb to the vision of what you think the kiosk should be like. Put reality into play when planning. Change strategies when they fall flat. Listen to customer feedback. Don't underestimate the competition. Realign advertising tactics.

Improve the Interactive Retail Experience

How to best use kiosks for an interactive retail experience.

The retail business is quickly being transformed by the selling power of the interactive experience. In interactive stores, like Apple, a combination of screens, tablets, laptops and phones are utilized to engage and educate consumers. When choosing to deploy an interactive retail kiosk, there are important details to keep in mind to optimize the user's experience.

Interactive Retail Experience

  • It's about the customer. Everything from onscreen content to aesthetic and ergonomic kiosk design needs to be implemented with the customer in mind. Address the needs of your customers. Go beyond simply offering web portals, an application many phones already have in place. Make it simple for customers to get information, and let them quickly complete transactions to optimize their in-store product browsing time.
  • Kiosk placement. Locate systems where they are convenient, highly visible, and coordinate well with the surrounding décor.

Selling Benefits of a Kiosk

Mall kiosks find success compared to traditional stores.

Kiosks have become a big business as more entrepreneurs are discovering the flexibility and marketing capabilities kiosks allow. Many businesses have come to call the middle of the mall home for their ventures. Gone are the days of retail merchandising units, the outdated 4-foot-by-8-foot carts with wagon wheels. Kiosks today are more like miniature stores with greater potential than ever to help turn a retail idea into a reality.

Selecting a Kiosk Size

Posted by adminx on Feb 14, 2013 4:55:15 AM

How to choose the correct kiosk size.

The best kiosk size for any business is the one that fits comfortably in the rental space and has ample storage space for products when the day is through. At Palmer Retail Solutions, the most commonly ordered kiosk size is 10 ft x 10 ft. When deciding on the best size for your kiosk, you will want to consider three things:

  1. Your product
  2. The amount of storage space versus display space you desire
  3. Island versus walkthrough design

Product
The more expensive the product, the more storage space your kiosk will need. While a Pillow Pet kiosk owner may be able to leave their product overnight locked inside the display cases, a Rolex watch distributor is unlikely to be willing to take that much risk. We also find that cellular or wireless suppliers tend to need more space, due to the number of security devices required as part of the product display.
