Here's How You Know It's Time for New Store Fixtures

Posted by Kathy Heil on Jan 8, 2016 1:20:50 PM

Display units are more than furniture, they provide the functional structure for your store’s layout. And even though they serve primarily as background and support for your merchandise, their aesthetic role is undeniable. So knowing when it’s time for new store fixtures requires evaluating both functional and aesthetic factors.

The right time depends on your type of store, how long you’ve had your fixtures, what materials they’re made of, and how much interaction display units have with merchandise or customers. Shelves that hold heavy canned goods that move quickly will look worn sooner than shelves that hold soft sweaters in a boutique.

When it's time for a new look.

An antique or comfortably-funky look may be appealing and even desirable in certain stores, but worn-out, dirty, dented, etc. fixtures make your store look unkempt and dirty. This reflects poorly on your merchandise and overall store brand.

Besides, successful visual merchandising relies on “refreshment” to keep customers interested. (It can also spark fresh interest in the sales people who work in your store every day.) But that doesn’t mean you have to replace all your fixtures at once. A single new unit or grouping can spur excitement on its own by revitalizing your store’s appearance. Or it can create a new merchandise focal point or department.

5 Tips for Maintaining Your Retail Store Fixtures

Posted by Kathy Heil on Dec 21, 2015 12:00:09 PM

Retail store fixtures

By the time the holiday rush is over, your retail store fixtures may be looking as bedraggled as you feel. In fact, your entire store is no doubt ready for a makeover. While you might think of post-holiday rehab as an early form of intense “spring cleaning,” keeping each retail store fixture in appealing condition is part of a broader, ongoing store recovery process. Make maintaining order and cleanliness a daily ritual.

These tips will help you get the New Year off to a fresh – and fresh-looking – start, and they’ll make it easier to maintain your store all year long.

1. Clean those shelves.

It’s hard to imagine a retail store that doesn’t have shelving. Horizontal surfaces such as tables and counters, gondola and display case shelves can seem like magnets for dust that quickly accumulates. Deep-clean all your shelves now, then keep them wiped-down regularly for easy ongoing maintenance.

Using a half-and-half mixture of white vinegar and water is easy, inexpensive and highly effective. You can use it on any type of retail store fixture material. Simply apply the mixture with a spray bottle, then wipe clean with paper towels. (You can save even more money and do your part for the environment by using a bucket and reusable cloth instead of paper towels.)

How Store Fixtures Affect Your Customer Service

Posted by Kathy Heil on Nov 12, 2015 11:39:23 AM

There is no better customer service than giving people such a great experience they can’t wait to come back. The store fixtures you choose and how you use them throughout your store set the tone for each customer’s entire shopping experience. Your store layout can subtly beckon and lead shoppers on a pleasant (and successful) browsing and buying journey.

Without proper forethought, however, your layout can create literal and psychological barriers. No sale there.

How layout works

Fixtures provide the foundation of your store’s visual appeal. They make shopping easier and make sure people get to see all your wonderful merchandise. This last element is crucial, because impulse choices represent an increasing percentage of retail sales.

Choosing the Materials for Your Custom Store Fixtures

Posted by Kathy Heil on Sep 8, 2015 10:01:00 AM

Why bother with custom store fixtures? Why would you not? The last thing any retailer wants is to be mistaken for some other store, or to be so nondescript that you go unnoticed by shoppers. Custom store fixtures aren’t just smarter merchandising, they’re more fun to design. On top of that, your customers will get a better in-store experience, and so will you.

Why are custom store fixtures better?

Custom store fixtures support overall visual merchandising, make your space more flexible, allow you to easily meet ADA or other legal requirements, and stimulate purchasing, all while helping you control costs.

You can create one-of-a-kind fixtures from virtually any material:

  • Wood
  • Plywood or fiberboard
  • Veneers and laminates
  • Acrylic
  • Polycarbonate
  • Aluminum, stainless steel or decorative metals such as copper

One of the reasons that shoppers still love brick and mortar stores compared to online buying is the ability to engage with your merchandise as they make their choices. The more you appeal to their senses, the more excited they will be to shop in your store. The most important sense for retailers is visual, so how you arrange merchandise on your store fixtures directly impacts sales.
