Colorful, Interesting Kiosks Drive Sales

A kiosk that sells is far more than a collection of products. It’s a visual presence that almost takes on a life of its own, beckoning

shoppers even in the midst of the busiest mall traffic. But that doesn’t happen by accident. Presenting merchandise in mall kiosks requires careful consideration of every small (and mall) detail. Properly merchandised kiosks are irresistibly colorful and interesting. They encourage interaction, eliminating the need for sales people to aggressively “work” potential customers. After all, comfortable shoppers buy more, and they return to buy again.

Here are 7 tips for presenting merchandise in mall kiosks:

  1. Incorporate video displays.
Movement always captures attention, and a video loop that introduces or demonstrates your product can represent a welcome, non-threatening alternative for shoppers who are not quite ready for personal interaction. By providing initial information, videos also position your sales person as a helpful resource to answer questions rather than someone who is “pushing” products.
  2. Get rid of clutter.
If your kiosk looks messy because it’s over-stuffed with randomly arranged merchandise, it will put off potential customers rather than attracting them. At the other end of the spectrum, a kiosk that is just plain boring won’t attract interest, either. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can create a head-turning kiosk.
  3. Customize fixtures.
With limited space, choose fixtures that offer storage as well as display space. Custom design helps here, because your fixtures should be an integral part of kiosk design, color and finish. That includes everything down to your hardware and accessories. The best design emphasizes product visibility, inviting customers to take a closer look. An important note, fixtures that look too much like walls can form psychological barriers.
  4. Use color that pops,
Whether you choose bright, bold colors or softer calming tones should depend on your merchandise and audience. Let your branding be your guide.
  5. Compartmentalize merchandise.
You can’t increase your kiosk’s footprint, but you can go up (not out of reach, though). Varying display heights or shapes makes your display more interesting. Use color blocking – grouping products of a given color – or color repetition to produce interesting visual patterns. Or you can group merchandise by theme so it’s easy to find a particular item.
  6. A kiosk that looks full and tidy is most inviting.
Work continuously to re-stock products as necessary or straighten displays after customers have moved merchandise.
  7. Understand the language of graphics.
Along with how you arrange your fixtures and products, signage and graphics can draw customers to your kiosk and encourage them to buy.

If you’re planning your first kiosk, keep in mind these principles for presenting merchandise in mall kiosks. If you’re not so new, it may be time to take a good look at what you do. Could a kiosk makeover boost your sales?
